Which product suits a used car
All three main finance products are available on used vehicles. Which one fits depends on the car's age and what you want at the end of the agreement.
| Product | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Hire purchase | Any age, and keeping the car | Higher monthly payment than PCP |
| PCP | Newer used stock, changing regularly | Rarely offered on older vehicles |
| Personal loan | Private sales and older cars | No Section 75 protection |
How age affects what you can get
Lenders look at how old the vehicle will be when the agreement ends, not how old it is today. Many work to a limit of around ten to twelve years, or roughly 100,000 to 150,000 miles, at the end of the term.
In practice that means an older car is usually financeable, but over a shorter term. A shorter term means a higher monthly payment for the same amount borrowed, so a deposit helps more than it would on a newer vehicle.
What to check before you commit
- Service history, and whether it matches the mileage on the clock.
- MOT history online — recurring advisories tell you what is coming.
- A provenance check for outstanding finance and write-off markers.
- An insurance quote on the specific vehicle, before you sign anything.
