Personal use versus working use

A 4x4 used as a family car is financed like any other car. One used on a farm, an estate or a site is assessed differently — lenders think about wear, mileage type and how the vehicle will present at the end of the agreement.

If the vehicle is genuinely for a business, business finance may be available and may have tax advantages. That is a conversation to have with your accountant alongside us.

Modifications

Modifications are common on 4x4s and can affect both finance and insurance. Lifted suspension, winches, snorkels, light bars and rewrapped bodywork all change the vehicle from the specification the lender is valuing.

Running costs to budget for

  • Insurance, which is frequently higher on larger and modified vehicles.
  • Vehicle Excise Duty, which is significant on higher-emission and higher-value models.
  • Tyres — 4x4 tyres are expensive and off-road use wears them fast.
  • Fuel, particularly on older large-capacity diesels.
